Summary
James Bethel Gresham (1893-1917) has been called the first American soldier to die in World War I. He was born in McLean County, Kentucky. His family moved to Evansville, Indiana in 1901, where he attended Centennial School. He enlisted in the United States Army and was a member of Company F, 16th Infantry.
