Abstract
This senior design report details the creation of modular attachments for conventional wheelchairs, aiming to enhance mobility and safety while addressing common injuries associated with standard hand rim wheelchairs. It explores two main innovations: a lever drive system and anti-tip rear casters, both designed to improve maneuverability and user experience. The lever drive system introduces a versatile propulsion method that helps alleviate common injuries found in standard hand rim wheelchairs. With carefully engineered lever arms, a braking system, and a gear system, this system provides users with an intuitive and efficient way to control the wheelchair. It ensures prompt stops and optimizes energy transfer, thereby reducing strain and potential injuries commonly associated with manual hand rim propulsion. The anti-tip rear casters prioritize stability, specifically addressing concerns during sudden movements or on uneven terrain without compromising maneuverability. These attachments are user-friendly and easily adaptable to cater to specific user needs. The report thoroughly covers the design, engineering, and testing procedures conducted to ensure the reliability, safety, and user-friendliness of these modular attachments. These attachments aim to significantly enhance traditional wheelchair functionality, promising improved mobility solutions and a reduced risk of associated injuries for users.
