After 9/11, it emerged as a more focused attempt to show that 'small' can be 'attractive and functional' in an era of normative political and religious radicalism. This book argues that Small States Theory is not relevant to the perplexities of the post-multipolar international system and produces a new theory, the Smart States Theory. Based on structural and neoclassical realism, it attempts to identify the origins of 'state-smartness' in foreign policy, leadership, and domestic politics. The United Arab Emirates will be used as the case study of this novel theoretical approach. The impressive evolution of the Trucial States to a modern nation-state of high technology, dynamic foreign policy as the recent pandemic fully showed, unique leadership, and unparalleled tolerance towards other religions and cultures, make the UAE a brilliant example of a smart state of the 21st century. The reader of the book will be introduced to a new theory in International Relations as well as to the history, politics, society, and leadership of a state that plays a pivotal role not only in the Gulf region but in the broader framework of the Middle East too; the United Arab Emirates. 001484209 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed November 27, 2023). 001484209 650_6 $$aPetits États. 001484209 650_0 $$aInternational relations$$xHistory$$y21st century.$$0(DLC)sh 85025244 001484209 650_0 $$aStates, Small.$$zUnited States$$0(DLC)sh2009124139 001484209 651_0 $$aUnited Arab Emirates$$xForeign relations. 001484209 651_6 $$aÉmirats arabes unis$$xRelations extérieures. 001484209 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001484209 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aLitsas, Spyridon N., 1974-$$tSmart instead of small in international relations theory.$$dCham : Springer, [2023]$$z3031446364$$z9783031446368$$w(OCoLC)1394891113 001484209 830_0 $$aContributions to international relations. 001484209 852__ $$bebk 001484209 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-44637-5$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001484209 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1484209$$pGLOBAL_SET 001484209 980__ $$aBIB 001484209 980__ $$aEBOOK 001484209 982__ $$aEbook 001484209 983__ $$aOnline 001484209 994__ $$a92$$bISE
