Abstract

The purpose of this project was to design and prototype a motorized device that can feed various diameters of climbing rope so that users can inspect their ropes more efficiently. Current inspection methods (i.e. by hand) are slow and inefficient. Many climbers do not inspect their ropes at all because it takes so long and is tiring on hands. This presents an obvious danger to all involved parties. It is hoped that a more effective inspection method, such as the one developed in this project, will encourage climbers to inspect their ropes and in turn improve safety. As the unit mns, a loop of rope is fed in front of the user so that they can visually inspect the rope for damage. The device itself was designed to be portable and compact while still achieving design objectives such as: having built in safeties, being compatible with various rope sizes, and feeding rope at an adequate speed.
