Abstract

This project entails the design of a bridge spanning Flat Creek in Cannelburg, Indiana. The design was informed by hydraulic and hydrologic modeling and analysis of the creek performed by Brian Wilson and Aaron Rohner. The bridge was designed under HL-93 loading and shall withstand 100-year flood conditions. Design procedures include ensuring compliance with American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) requirements, determining loads and load safety factors, developing the proper steel reinforcement and coverage in concrete members, properly sizing the deck, beams, piers, and footings, and determining appropriate soil properties for backfill soil. Information provided to the team includes the height and span of the bridge, maximum size and shape of the piers, and the velocity of the stream during a 100-year flood event.
