TY - GEN N2 - Frederick Douglass High School band with instructor Alfred Porter (1903-1981). Porter taught for 45 years, at Douglass, and at Lincoln and Bosse High Schools. Clark Street School at 215 Clark St. was built in 1869, with a new building built in 1889. In 1897 it also became a house school, which in 1919 was renamed for Frederick Douglass. In 1928 a new school was built on Lincoln Ave., and Douglass students moved there. The community hoped that the Douglass name would remain, but the new school became Lincoln High School at 635 Lincoln Ave., which still exists but is now K-8. Douglass School was razed circa 1937.
