Description

Governor Street School class picture with principal P. T. Miller (Pinkney Thompson Miller, Sr. 1860-1947) and teacher W. A. Greene. Governor St. School was located on the northeast corner of Governor St. and Mulberry St., and was built in 1874 to ease overcrowding in 2 other schools. It also served as the Colored High School until those students moved into the rear of a building at 7th St. and Vine St. (SEE MSS 184-1076) until their own building was built. All black students were incorporated into Lincoln School in 1928. This building was razed circa 1962.
