Illinois St. In 1856 a U.S. Marine Hospital was opened on the banks of the Ohio River to tend to sick or injured river men. By 1870 it ceased operation and vacated its building. A new Marine Hospital, seen here, was built in 1888. This new facility, built on 10 acres on the west side of the city, was not on the riverbanks but was not far from them. It was to treat servicemen in general and was a forerunner of veterans hospitals. It closed in 1947, and by 1949 it was used as a US Navy & Marine Corps Reserve Training Center. They moved out in 1975; the structures were damaged by fire in 1981 and razed circa 1984."}, url = {http://library.usi.edu/record/1511434}, }
