Indiana St. Circa 1849 this home was built and was the residence of Dr. John Laval. In 1872 it became an orphanage for all orphans, regardless of race. In 1883 the facility became segregated and only white orphans lived here. A side wing was added sometime around 1910, and in 1952 this house was razed and the Hillcrest Youth Services (current name) facilities were built. NOTE: because of the name given on this postcard, it is thought that it predates segregation, although a duplicate copy was postmarked in 1911--see RH 033-082 also.}, number = {DA}, recid = {1511437}, address = {1872}, year = {1872}, }
