Indiana St. Circa 1849 this home was built and was the residence of Dr. John Laval. In 1872 it became an orphanage for all orphans, regardless of race. In 1883 the facility became segregated and only white orphans lived here. A side wing was added sometime around 1910, and in 1952 this house was razed and the Hillcrest Youth Services (current name) facilities were built. NOTE: because of the name given on this postcard, it is thought that it predates segregation, although a duplicate copy was postmarked in 1911--see RH 033-082 also. 001511437 542__ $$fhttp://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-NC/1.0/ 001511437 6531_ $$aClubs and Organizations 001511437 655__ $$aColor Photograph 001511437 691__ $$aEvansville, IN 001511437 7001_ $$aLewellin Post Card 001511437 8564_ $$92279dbe7-1136-48c4-b3fa-955cc6ecd5e0$$s4343184$$uhttps://library.usi.edu/record/1511437/files/20656.jp2 001511437 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1511437$$pGLOBAL_SET 001511437 914__ $$aVolume962/RH 033-083.tif 001511437 914__ $$aRLIC 001511437 980__ $$aSpecial & Regional History Collection 001511437 984__ $$aEvansville Postcard Collection 001511437 985__ $$aImage
