Description

SE 1st St., looking southeast from Locust St., just visible in the foreground. On the left is the Elks Home at 100 SE 1st St., formerly 400-8 Upper 1st St. It was built between 1904-1906 and in 1974 became the Upstate Dinner Theatre. It was destroyed by arson in 1977 and subsequently razed. There is now a parking lot here. Prior to the Elks club, another hotel, the Sherwood Hotel, stood on this location. When the Elks were scouting a location, the owner of the hotel across the street (on the right here) sweetened the deal for them to buy this property so his hotel did not face another competitor. On the right is the 1874 St. George Hotel, which was razed in 1915 to make way for the McCurdy Hotel, which currently occupies this location. Of the other three buildings on the left, it is believed that only the one in the middle still stands, but this angle makes positive verification impossible. The church spire on the right is for St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 301 SE 1st St., formerly 601 Upper 1st St. (on the corner of Chestnut St. The congregation, which began in 1836, built this facility in 1886. The interior was gutted by fire in 1938 but rebuilt. The spire is 129 ft. (church website says 124 ft.) in height, and was used as a guide by steamboats on the Ohio River."
