Description
"Birds Eye View, Evansville, Ind. The cupola is the (old) Vanderburgh County Courthouse at 201 NW 4th St., built in 1890 to replace an earlier building and in use as a courthouse until 1969. It stands today. The church spire on the left is Holy Trinity Catholic Church 211 NW 3rd St., originally 12-16 Upper 3rd St. It was built in 1849-1851, and the steeple seen here added in 1873. A fire destroyed the church on Easter weekend April 3, 1950. Lightning struck the building overnight, and it burned to the ground. Services were temporarily held in the former school building until the present church was built. (The new church is very plain and modern and looks nothing like this.) The building shown here next to it (closer to foreground) is its school at 20 Upper 3rd St. It was built in 1869 and served as the Catholic High School, closed in 1948, and was razed in 1958. This postcard, Nr. C 1846, was printed in Germany.
