Description
Centennial School at 112 N 12th Ave. was built in 1875-1876 to serve the growing population of the west side of the city. Additional wings were added circa 1895, 1910, and 1940. The school corporation built a newer school called Helfrich Park in 1965 and closed and sold this one to Mead Johnson. Also in 1965, public higher education came to Evansville in the form of a branch campus of Indiana State University, Indiana State University Evansville, or ISUE. ISUE classes were held in this building until 1969 when the campus moved to its current location. ISUE is now independent and renamed the University of Southern Indiana, or USI. Centennial School was razed in 1972.
