TY - GEN N2 - Evans Hall at 500-10 Locust St. "At Mozart Hall on January 7, 1861, a drunken argument between brothers Robert M. and John Paul Evans, grandsons of citys namesake Col. Robert Evans, escalated to a gunfight. Both men died in the gunfire, as well as Solomon Gumbert, a 6-year-old bystander. After the incident, their mother, Saleta Evans, dedicated her life to the temperance movement. Saleta spearheaded the construction of Evans Hall, which was located on the corner of Locust and Fifth streets. When the hall opened on May 25, 1879, it was the largest public gathering place in the city, hosting lectures, dances, and theater, as well as serving as headquarters of the local temperance movement.".Evans Hall eventually fell into disrepair and was razed in 1930 to make way for the construction of the Central Library building, which now houses the Childrens Museum of Evansville.
