Description
This is the Carpenter House at 405 Carpenter St. "Willard Carpenter was born at Stafford, Orange County, Vermont, in 1803. He made his first trip to Evansville in 1822 and settled here in 1837. His main interest was in the promotion of railroads in Southern Indiana. A noteworthy philanthropy is the Willard Library of Evansville, which he endowed." This house was built in 1848-49. In 1933 it was bought by the American Legion, and sold to WTVW-Channel 7 in 1958. In 1977 it became the corporate offices for Medco Center, and in 1985 it became the home of the local PBS and NPR affiliates, which are still there today. (http://www.historicevansville.com/site.php?id=carpenter405) Some local historian beleive it may have been used as part of the underground railroad, although there is no confrimation of this fact.
