Description

This is a section of City High School House at 203 NW 6th St., which later became known as Central High School. It was built in 1868 as Evansville High School, the first high school in town, at 203 NW 6th St. There were structural additions in 1898. In 1918, another high school was built in Evansville (Francis Joseph Reitz High School), and the school in this photograph was renamed Central High School. Classes ceased at this facility in 1971 when a newer Central High School was built on First Ave. The building was almost entirely razed; only the gymnasium remains and is incorporated into the YMCA
