Description

Sycamore St., with the cross street in the middle being NW 2nd St. The fence on the left is that of the old Post Office, located at 200 NW 2nd St. It, alone of the buildings seen here, still stands, although it no longer serves as a post office. From the left, on 2nd St. are Vickery Bros. wholesale/retail grocers (only partially seen here) at 112-118 Upper 2nd St. (built 1854, razed 1938), the tall brick building that was Parsons and Scoville, also a grocers, which burned to the ground in 1911, and the shorter white building, identity unclear, was razed in 1938. Crossing Sycamore, the tall brick building with the dome, at 19-25 NW 2nd St., was the Business Men's Association, aka the Grein Building, Waverly Place, and the Mercantile Bank Building. It was razed in the 1970s. Finally, crossing 2nd to the white building shown on the right with the La Palma cigar advertisement, is the formerly 201-9 Upper 2nd St., 22 NW 2nd St. Acme Hotel. The building was built as a hotel circa 1866 and was renamed Acme in 1893; it was razed in 1956. Today these spaces are occupied by parking garages and an empty lot. This is postcard 10983.
