Description

Advertisement, worded thus-- "Leich & Lemche Wholesale Druggists No. 22 First Street, Odd Fellows Block, Evansville, Indiana." Charles Leich immigrated from Germany as a young man in 1848, and by at least 1858 was partnered with August C. Carlstedt in the wholesale druggist business. This partnership, located on Main St., continued through the Civil War. Sometime after that Leich entered a partnership with an established Evansville businessman, owner of Evansville Woolen Mills, Julius Augustus Lemcke. Their partnership, first on Main St. and then at the 1st St. address shown here, prospered. Sometime in the early 1880s Leich renewed his partnership with Carlstedt, with another partner, and had a druggist business at another address on 1st St. "In 1890, however, he established Charles Leich & Company with his son, Carl, and Alexander Lemcke as partners. Lemcke withdrew from the firm after about five years." Charles Leich & Company continued until at least the 1980s, in the Evansville Woolen Mill building at 427 NW 4th St. / 420 NW 5th St. once owned by J.A. Lemcke. (http://www.indianahistory.org/our-services/books-publications/hbr/charles-leich.pdf) Brucken's, a wholesale kitchen and supplies business, occupied this building after this. It's still standing today, although its occupant, if any, is unclear.
