Postcard " of Rathbone Memorial Home at S. 2nd St. Evansville, Ind. 3671 Pub. By W.A. Connor--this text is written in fancy script that, by the slant, may have been written by a left hander. There are 2 small children and a dog in the yard. "The Rathbone Memorial Home, located at 1320 SE Second St., was dedicated April 5, 1905, after 20 years of planning. The home was founded by Kate and Caroline Rathbone, wife and sister of prominent banker George Rathbone, as a residential facility for elderly women of means. Residents would provide at least $300, more than $7,800 in today's money, and any other assets to the foundation, who would then provide care to residents for the rest of their life. The Rathbone Home was one of the earliest nursing homes in Indiana, predating the modern safety net for the elderly. The Rathbone was acquired by Welborn in 1967 and continued as a retirement home until 1983. After briefly serving as apartments, the Rathbone Retirement Community was opened in the building in 1988, to provide assisted living to its residents. George Washington Rathbone (1813-1883) was with Evansville National Bank, the predecessor to today's Old National Bank.
