Description

In terms of orientation, the street running perpendicular to the photograph is Court St. The first intersecting street seen is Market St. The Vanderburgh County Courthouse (building with cupola) at 201 NW 4th St. was completed in 1890. The building still stands, but is now referred to as the old courthouse, as government offices moved into another building in 1969. The flat topped building to the left of the courthouse with the columns across the front (zoom in) is the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum at 350 Court St. It was built in 1916-1917 as a tribute to the men of Vanderburgh County who fought in the American Civil War and SpanishAmerican War. The building across Market St. from the coliseum (only the Court St. side is seen here) was built in 1911/1912 as Liederkranz Maennerchor, a German men's choral society. With the advent of WWI, anything German was looked upon with suspicition, so in 1918 this was sold to the Knights of Columbus. It was used by other organizations over the years, but fell into disrepair until it is currently being renovated as part of an assisted living facility. A newer structure that is part of this facility now occupies most of the parking lot shown here. Further back on Market St., behind the Maennerchor, is St. John's United Church of Christ at 321 NW 3rd St. (All that is seen here is the back.) It was built in 1850 and has been remodeled a number of times--the front now has a stone facade. In front of the courthouse (i.e., nearer the foreground), the building with the multiple roof lines is the rectory for Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 219 NW 3rd St., built in 1912. The church itself is the long low buiding, with the right side being taller, is in front of the rectory, and is a much newer structure, built in 1950. This replaced the original, far more elaborate 1849/1851 church (the delay in building was due to a cholera epidemic) which burned after a lightning strike Easter weekend in 1950.
