Sign outside Old Post Office and Customhouse at 200 NW 2nd St., proclaiming that a preservation project of the city of Evansville, Russell G. Lloyd, Mayor, is underway. It notes that "Acquisition and restoration of this property, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, has been funded with the assistance of a matching grant-in-aid from the Dept. of the Interior, National Park Service, administered by the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources, under the provisions of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, administered locally by the Dept. of Metropolitan Development and the Redevelopment Commission." Construction on this building began in 1873 and it was completed in 1879, with wings added in 1918. It was abandoned by the federal government in 1969 and acquired by the city in 1977. Today it hosts a venue planning business.
