Description

The Evansville Sanitarium at 412 SE 4th St., formerly 712 Upper 4th St., opened in 1894. In 1914 it expanded and was renamed Walker Hospital, which in turn became Welborn-Walker Hospital in the 1920s. In 1944 this facility incorporated as Welborn Memorial Baptist Hospital, later dropping the Baptist part of the name when it no longer owned by the church, although the affiliation remained. In the 1950s a new clinic was built across the street and became the main facility. In the 1990s Welborn was purchased by St. Mary's Hospital (now St. Vincent's Hospital) and closed. Today the campus is Select Speciality Hospital. From the hospital's website: "Our hospital provides comprehensive, specialized care for patients with acute or chronic respiratory disorders. Our primary focus is to wean medically complex patients from mechanical ventilation and restore independent breathing." The building shown in this photograph is believed to be the original Evansville Sanitarium before it was expanded.
