Description

R. Mannheimer & Co. at 208-10 NW 1st St., originally 15-17 Upper 1st St. Raphael Mannheimer and Benjamin Lowenhaupt built this building in 1874 for their wholesale dealership in fancy groceries and their Crescent City Candy Manufactory. It was razed circa 1970. Next door at 7 Upper 1st St. was C. H. Ellert, "dealer in leather, findings, tanning materials, &c., manufacturer of boot, shoe, and gaiter uppers, belting, hose, &c. (1882 city directory) This was also his residence. Mannheimer's August 24, 1917 obituary says he was president of the Evansville Packing Co., a circa 1910 business. The May 1, 1925 obituary for Casper H. Ellert (presumed to be the same man as C.H. Ellert) says he was a broom and map manufacturer--again, apparently a later business.
