George S. Sonntag built this Tuscan style villa at 726 SE 1st St., formerly 1028 Upper 1st St., in 1863. He owned George S. Sonntag & Co., importers and dealers in hardware, cutlery, guns, pistols, &c., according to the 1882 city directory. Circa 1870, Mrs. Samuel (Martha J.) Bayard, widow of the president of Old National Bank, moved in. She died on March 2, 1909. The Google Maps 2012 view of this house shows it to be in excellent condition.
