Description

Chapel of St Paul's United Church of Christ at 2227 W. Michigan St. The church is at the corner of W. Michigan St. and N. 12th Ave., and stretches back just shy of the intersection with N. 11th Ave. This chapel is midway down the block on W. Michigan St. It dates to 1961, but the church is much older and far more traditional looking than this. German settlers came in increasing numbers to rural areas west of Pigeon Creek in the late 1800s, and a desire for a church grew. The congregation of the newly named Evangelical St. Peter's Reformed Church met in a German Methodist church until their own church was built at this location in 1881-1882. Financial worries caused a call for help to the Evangelical part of the denomination, and around 1895 the name was changed to St. Paul's Evangelical Church to reflect this. This was a German speaking church, but tensions during the time of WWI caused the change to English. "The Evangelical Synod of North America merged with the Reformed Church in the United States, and the churchs name became St. Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1934. Another merger in 1957 between the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Church created the United Church of Christ. St. Pauls United Church of Christ continues under that denomination today The Evangelical Synod of North America merged with the Reformed Church in the United States, and the churchs name became St. Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1934.
