Description

Brick street full of cars and horses and buggies, labeled as a W.E. Deeds photo. It is the 100 block of 4th St., looking west. The tall building on the left, background, is Citizens National Bank at 19 NW 4th St.. It began in Evansville in 1874 at a 1st St. location, and moved to a Main St. location in 1884 after consolidation with 2 other banks. It moved to this location in 1916 and at 10 stories tall, was the first "skyscraper." After the bank moved out in 1959, this eventually became the Hilliard Lyons building. It stood vacant after Hilliard Lyons left in 2007 until it became luxury apartments in 2012. It was also known as the Southern Securities building. Just visible in the right background is the cupola of the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse, a Beaux Arts structure was designed by Henry Wolters of Louisville, KY. Construction began in 1888 and was completed by 1890, with offices moving in early in 1891. It occupies the block bounded by 4th, Vine, 5th, and Court streets, an area that was once a turnaround basin for the Wabash and Erie Canal. The building still stands, although it has not served as a courthouse since 1969. Today, most of the buildings just visible on the left, closest to the camera, still exist, while virtually none, maybe none, of those on the right do.
