001515086 520__ $$a2nd St. from Sycamore St. On the left is the post office building at 200 NW 2nd St., now called the old post office. It was built 1873-1879. Abandoned by the federal government in 1969, it was acquired by the city in 1977 and currently holds a catering/event venue. Beyond it is the Vine Street Presbyterian Church. "Vine St Presbyterian was organized in 1838 after national theological divisions produced a local schism between it and the Presbyterian Church (Little Church on the Hill). Encorporated as Evansville Presbyterian Church, the "old school" faction temporarily met at the original courthouse. 
In 1843, a new church was built at the corner of 2nd and Vine St. The church was appropriately renamed Vine Street Presbyterian. The church worshipped at this site until a new building on 2nd and Mulberry St was completed. (http://historicevansville.com/site.php?id=vinestpresby) Given that there is an advertisement for an ague tonic across this building, this is probably after the church moved out and it was used as a livery stable. Sometime after 1895 this building was razed; the YWCA now stands on this location. Across the street from the post office is the elaborate 1854 Vickery Bros. wholesale and retail grocers.The 1882 city directory lists them as Samuel, William Wilson, and George S. Vickery, and Elder Cooper. This building was razed in 1938. The taller building on the right is tentatively identified as the old Parsons & Scoville wholesale grocers. That business moved to another location in 1908 and in 1911 this building burned. Nothing shown on this side of the street remains today.
