Description

This Vanderburgh County Courthouse at 201 NW 4th St. was completed in 1890. The building still stands, but is now referred to as the old courthouse, as government offices moved into another building in 1969. (It would not have served as a courthouse at the time of this photograph.) The courthouse spans the block between NW 4th St. and NW 5th St., bounded by Vine St. and Court St. This extreme view looks up at either the entrance on Vine St. or the one on Court, both of which appear to be identical. (There are some differences, but they cannot be seen here.) Above this, not seen from this angle, would be the cupola. The courthouse sits on ground that was once the turnaround for the Wabash and Erie Canal. SEE ALSO MSS 184-0164.
