Description

Sterling Brewery at 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. at the corner with Fulton Ave. There was a brewery on or very near this site as early as 1863. The building pictured here was built in 1880 and partially rebuilt in 1890 after a a wind storm. "The ice house cupola toppled over and a the wall facing Fulton gave way." After a series of mergers, etc., it became Sterling sometime around 1920. "Like many others during Prohibition, the company renamed itself Sterling Products Co. They made soft drinks, near beer, and malt extract (which was used by illicit homebrewers). It became Sterling Brewers Inc after Prohibition was over in 1933." In 1972 it was bought out, and then sold again in 1988. It closed in 1997 and was razed in 1998. It was the last brewery standing in Evansville. (http://www.historicevansville.com/site.php?id=sterling) The addition seen here is obviously later than the 1890 rebuild.
