Oral history interview of James Whelan. James L. Whelan enlisted in WWII (1943-1946) in the Navy and served as a Hospital Corpsman First (1st) Class aboard LST 20 and LST 205 in the Pacific Theater. He was in the Philippines and at the battle for Mindoro Island. At this battle he saw other LSTs sunk by kamikazes. He received recognition for the American Campaign, a bronze star for the Asiatic-Pacific Area, 2 bronze stars for the liberation of the Philippines, and a WWII Victory ribbon.
