Oral history interview of Darrel Martin. Darrel E. Martin was drafted into WWII (1941-1945) and served in the Army as a Sergeant in C Battery, 54th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Armored Division, 1st Army. In addition to service at Fort Sheridan in Illinois, Camp Polk in Louisiana, and California and Pennsylvania, he saw action in the European Theater in England and France, was at the Battle of the Bulge, landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day, and was present at the Battle of Ardennes and the Rhineland Campaign. He earned or was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the Expert Badge for Submarine, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a Silver Star (for battles in Normandy, northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany). At one time his unit was 100 miles behind enemy lines.
