Oral history interview of James Jenkins. James M. Jenkins was drafted into WWII in the Army 478th Amphibious Truck Company, 1st Engineer Special Brigade and served as a Technician Fifth (5th) Grade. He was at Operation Husky (Invasion of Sicily), Operation Overlord (D-Day Normandy Invasion), and Operation Torch (Invasion of North Africa). He was a DUKW driver, and received 5 battle stars, a Croix de Guerre (liberation of France) and as a Sharpshooter. His unit was with General Patton in Africa and Sicily. Per Encyclopedia Britannica online, DUKW, also called duck, [was a ] 2.5-ton six-wheel amphibious truck used in World War II by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Its primary purpose was to ferry ammunition, supplies, and equipment from supply ships in transport areas offshore to supply dumps and fighting units at the beach.
