"Oral history interview of William Schmidt. William George Schmidt enlisted in WWII (1942-1946) in the Army, Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon, 303rd Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division. He saw action in both the European and Pacific Theaters, in Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Iwo Jima, and Japan. He was present at the Battle of the Bulge and the battle for Iwo Jima. He was a Private First (1st) Class and served as a Scout 761 (a sniper), proficient with the M1 rifle. He gave diplomatic papers to Russians, and saw Mongolians on horseback. His was the first division to leave Europe. "
