Description

Blacks Chapel Methodist Church (later United Methodist Church). In 1849, friends and neighbors held Sunday morning worship service in the home of Ezekiel and Mary Ann Black, in Western Black Township. On September 17, 1849, Mr. Black donated land for a new church. In 1936, the members of the flood-destroyed Prairie Church merged with Blacks Chapel. In 1994, Blacks Chapel grew again with the merger of Zoar UMC. On January 1, 2009, Blacks Chapel grew once again with the merger of St. Johns UMC. In July of 2011, the church voted to purchase the existing car dealership building at 1800 W 4th Street in Mount Vernon, Indiana. (http://blackschapelmv.org/about-us/) The location shown here is the original, not the 2011 one. The church sign now reads Mount Vernon Community Church Blacks Chapel. The building pictured here still stands at 8012 Bald Knob Rd. and at one time housed the House of Prayer, but the current tenant is unclear.
