The Green River Locks and Dam No. 1 is located on the Green River near Henderson, Kentucky, at mile 9.1. The Navigation locks are located on the right descending bank of the Green river. The upper pool is maintained above the dam and extends upstream for a distance of 54 miles to the Green River Locks and Dam No. 2. ... The original Green River Locks and Dam 1 and 2 facilities were opened for barge traffic in 1840. The existing Locks and Dam 1 and 2 were both authorized as replacements on July 29, 1953, by Secretary of the Army under authority of Section 6 of the Rivers and Harbors Act approved March 3, 1909. The existing Green River Locks and Dams 1 and 2 began construction in 1954. Locks and Dams 2 was placed in operation in May 1956 and Locks and Dams 1 was placed in operation in June 1956.
