Description

300 block of Main St., with many people, cars, and streetcars on the street. On the left is Intermediate Life/Hughes Building/Eichel Block at 300 Main St. which was built in 1892, with part of the foundation from the 1852 courthouse that stood nearby. A number of different businesses occupied a portion of this space over the years. The structure was damaged by the fire in the Economy Store in 1951 (which destroyed a large portion of this block) and that portion torn down. The building was razed in 1984. Here one of the tenants is Schultz's Cloak House. On the right, on the sidewalk level of the building housing Draughon's Practical Business College, is Jacob Hartz & Co. (wholesale and retail cigarists) at 300 Main St. (formerly at 231 Main St.) Boston Dental Parlors at 308 1/2 Upper 3rd St. is just above this. The building that houses all these is the old German National Bank building, built in 1858 for another bank and modernized/remodeled by German National circa 1883. The sign for the Progress Clothing Co. at 309-311 Main St. can be seen just above the end of the streetcar.
