Description

The tribute of France to the first American soldiers placed upon our roll of honor, in commemoration of the Gresham Memorial Home at Evansville, Indiana April 1918, by the City National Bank. James Bethel Gresham (August 23, 1893 - November 3, 1917) was one of the first three American soldiers to die in WWI. He was born in Kentucky, but moved with his family to Evansville in 1901, attended Centennial School, and worked in one of the furniture factories. He died in France and was originally buried there, but in 1921 was reinterred at Locust Hill Cemetary in Evansville. The house referred to here was built around 1920 in his honor and given to his mother, Alice Hinton Bethel Gresham Dodd (1861-1927). It is located at 2 Wedeking Ave., near Garvin Park.
