Old courthouse at 3rd St. and Main St. This is the second Vanderburgh County courthouse, built 1852-1855, it replaced a 1820 structure. When nearly completed in 1855, it was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve, but rebuilt according to the same plans and opened in 1857. In 1891 the courthouse moved to its a location between Vine St., Court St., NW 3rd St., and NW 4th St. This is the location most commonly referred to as the old courthouse, the current seat of county business is in the Civic Center complex at 1 NW Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. The building seen in this photograph was razed in 1891, although its foundation was used to build its successor building, the Eichel Block, which was itself razed in 1984.
