Description

Drawing of General & Mrs. Robert Morgan Evans. General Robert Morgan Evans was a soldier, pioneer, business man, and one of the original proprietors of the city Evansville which bears his name. Evans (1782-1842) was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, served under William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Evans did not found the city of Evansville, but it was named after him as he was more prominent and his name more likely to attract settlers than that of the actual founder. His wife was Jane Evans (1786-1836).
