Description

This building is the 1848/1849 Willard Carpenter House.""Willard Carpenter was born at Stafford, Orange County, Vermont, in 1803. He made his first trip to Evansville in 1822 and settled here in 1837. His main interest was in the promotion of railroads in Southern Indiana. A noteworthy philanthropy is the Willard Carpenter Library of Evansville, which he endowed."" (http://historicevansville.com/site.php?id=carpenter405) What is represented here is the 1933 purchase of the home by the American Legion, and it served as its Funkhouser Post until 1958. The building has had 3 owners since this time, and it still stands today much as seen here, albeit without the American Legion sign on top. American Legion Funkhouser Post 8 still exists in Evansville, located at 6001 New Harmony Rd.
