Description

Main St. from 1st St. On the right is Buckskin Manufacturing at 111-115 Main St. The business moved into this new building in 1912. In 1929 the company became Stanley Clothing Co. It closed in 1967 and was razed soon thereafter. Across the street is R and G Furniture Store at 116-118 Main St. The building was built around 1896 for a different company, but R and G moved in in 1904. Some time around 1939 the exterior was remodeled, and the triangle at the top seen here was flattened. It went out of business in 1967 and was razed the next year. Nothing seen here remains of this block of Main St. The tall building on the right, background, does still exist. It was Evansville's first skyscraper, the Citizens National Bank building, built in 1916. Also known as the Southern Securities Building and the Hilliard Lyons Building, it is believed to house offices today.
