Description

View of Evansville from Post Office, Evansville, Ind. The cupola is the (old) Vanderburgh County Courthouse at 201 NW 4th St., built in 1890 to replace an earlier building and in use as a courthouse until 1969. It stands today. The church spire on the left is Holy Trinity Catholic Church 211 NW 3rd St., originally 12-16 Upper 3rd St. It was built in 1849-1851, and the steeple seen here added in 1873. A fire destroyed the church on Easter weekend April 3, 1950. Lightning struck the building overnight, and it burned to the ground. Services were temporarily held in the former school building until the present church was built. (The new church is very plain and modern and looks nothing like this.) The building shown here next to it is its school at 20 Upper 3rd St. It was built in 1869 and served as the Catholic High School, closed in 1948, and was razed in 1958. The Schminke and Co. left margin was at 1 Second Ave. It was built around 1870 as J. B. Mesker and Sons Cornice Works, becoming Schminke (a tin shop) around 1895 until it was razed around 1916 for the construction of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum at 350 Court St. The post office referred to in the caption is at 200 NW 2nd St., although it no longer serves as a post office. NOTE: There is a PM circled in the bottom left corner--this might mean that the original photograph was taken by Paul Mueller.
