Description

Evansville Museum of Arts and Sciences at 411 SE Riverside Dr. Interest in a museum in Evansville goes back to the Ladies Literary Club, formed in 1874 and incorporated in 1884. At first there were short term exhibitions at various venues, then in 1906 the first permanent museum opened in a historic home, the Barnes-Armstrong Mansion. This was razed in 1910; in 1928 the museum reopened in the former YWCA structure at 216 NW 2nd St. Known as the Temple of Fine Arts, this building housed the museum for many years. It was not until the 1950s that the structure seen here, on the banks of the Ohio River, was opened. The museum expanded/remodeled in the mid 2010s.
