Description

Main St. from 3rd St., looking towards 8th St. On the right is City National Bank, aka National City Bank at 227-229 Main St. The new City National Bank was built in 1913 at the corner 3rd and Main. It was built on the same spot as original courthouse which was torn down for the new bank. THe building was designed in the neoclassical style by Jennie and Mundie, architects from Chicago. The bank opened its doors Jan, 1 1914 after the bank moved from its previous location at 1st and Main. The bank was renamed in 1922 to National City Bank. Although no longer a bank, the contemporary facade looks much like this. The building with the turret, at 301-303 Main St., was once German National Bank and then at least 2 different business colleges. The tall building on this side is Citizens National Bank at 329-331 Main St. The bank was established in 1874, on 1st St., and moved to 130 Main St. in 1884 after consolidating with 2 other banks. In 1916 it moved into the building pictured here, Evansville's first skyscraper. The bank moved out in 1959 and the building later became known as the Hilliard Lyons building. The building still stands today, in good repair, although it no longer hosts any sort of financial institution. Across the street is the Hughes Building, a.k.a. the Eichel Block. The Hughes building was razed in 1984.
