Hermann Brothers Manufacturing at 201-3 N. Main St., originally 1401 Main St.; Southwestern Broom Manufacturing at what was formerly 701 9th Ave.; Joseph F. Reitz Furniture Factory at 206-218 Walker St.; A. Melzer and Co. at 1007 W Maryland St.; Evansville Foundry Association at 1-5 Read St. / 15 Read St.; Jacob Meyer and Bros. Planing Mill at 301 Lower Water St., roughly 601 NW Riverside Dr. Hermann Bros. (manufacturers of spring wagons and rollers, dealers in all kids of farming implements and seed) was built circa 1886. It became Heldt Co. in 1903 and was razed around 1980. Southwestern Broom was in business circa 1888-1922. These buildings are believed to have been razed, unless some remnants remain in the industrial buildings along 9th Ave. Reitz (Fred and Joseph F.) Furniture began around 1884 and within 10-11 years became Specialty Furniture Co. That business moved elsewhere and this building was razed circa 1913. Melzer, aka Indiana Soap Works, was built around 1870 and acquired by the Pretty Soap Co. around 1921. Other businesses used these buildings over the years until they were destroyed by fire in 2014 and razed. The Foundry built this factory in 1873. The company was known as Advance Stove Works when it closed in the 1950s. The buildings (all? most?) stand today, in use by Mattress Factory Showroom. Jacob Meyer built this company right on the Ohio River in 1859. At some time it either became Southern Planing Mill or was always called that. It was razed in 1932.
