Description
Ohio River ice gorge along what is now Riverside Dr., with people lining the St.s and a barge apparently trapped in the gorge. The building far right is Bement & Seitz Co., wholesale grocers, at 322-326 Upper Water St. at the corner with Locust St. (NOTE: Most photographs in this collection and others show this buildings later use by Keller Crescent Printing & Engraving Co.) According to the Fort Morgan Times [CO], Volume XIII, Number 27, February 19, 1897 , the river was at 34 ft. and rising, and virtually no water could be seen. The blockage extended from Newburgh, IN to Henderson, KY, completely through the horseshoe bend, a distance of about 12 miles.
