Description
Aerial view of Old National Bank at 420 Main St. The bank began in 1835 but did not move to this location until 1916. In 1970 the bank moved next door and this building was razed. In recent years the bank's new headquarters relocated to the riverfront in a new and modern building. The lower building with the gables 1 door down from the bank is the Hotel Lincoln, built around 1900 and in 1916 expanded so as to front on Main St. It was razed in 1967. The William Hughes (sign on side visible) building-Hughes Department at 508-514 Main St. opened in 1911, and probably housed the Evansville Dry Goods Store at the time of this photograph. Today it's been remodeled into loft apartments. If you zoom in you can see Loew's Victory Theatre at 600-614 Main St., which opened in 1921. Today this theatre has been completely restored and is the home of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.
