Description

Aerial view of downtown Evansville after the Economy Store fire. The fire, which was reported at 1:30 a.m., quickly spread from its origin in the rear of the Economy Store at 314-16 Main St.; within 1/2 hour it had jumped across the St. Over 200 firefighters responded. Some 11 stores and 6 office buildings were either damaged or destroyed, for an estimated cost of $6 million (approximately $57 million in 2016 dollars); since this was the main shopping district, about 200 people lost their jobs when their places of employment burned.
