Description

Stuart Symington, C. B. Enlow, and Edwin F. Diekmann in the back seat of a car. William Stuart Symington Jr. (1901-1988) was the first Secretary of the Air Force from 1947 to 1950 and was a Democratic United States Senator from Missouri from 1953 to 1976. Charles Bates Enlow (1879-1963) was chairman of the board of National City Bank and a prominent figure in Evansville; Enlow (athletic) Field is named after him. Edwin F. Diekmann (1887?-1964) was the mayor Evansville 1949-1952 and sheriff 1937-1941. He was also associated with his family business, Crescent Stove Works. Local cartoonist Karl Kae Knecht drew a cartoon (February 25, 1950) about how much closer and more the Russian threat seemed after a talk by the U.S. Secretary of the Air Force Symington--this provides context to this photograph.
