Description

Aerial view of St. Marys Hospital at 3700 Washington Ave. The Marine Hospital, which cared for ill and injured river men, opened in 1856 on the riverfront. It closed and vacated the building in 1870, and in 1872 St. Marys, operated by the Daughters of Charity, renovated it and opened its hospital there. In 1894 St. Marys moved to a new facility on First Ave. Ground was broken for its third home, seen here, in 1953, and in 1956, St. Marys moved to this, its current location. It is believed that 2 story building on the right, across from the entrance drive, is the Regina Pacis nursing home. To the left of the drive is Temple Adath Israel. St. Marys joined with St. Vincents in 2012 and in 2017 assumed that name. It is part of Ascension Health Care. While this view would still be recognizable, there has been a lot of construction in this area. The synagogue no longer stands at this location, a parking lot is in its space. The Regina Pacis building still stands but is now used for rehabilitation, with newer buildings built in front of it. There are also more buildings by the hospital itself.
